Cam Newton‘s debut performance was nothing short of amazing. 422 passing yards, 65% completion percentage, 2 TD’s in the air…. and a TD on the ground for icing. While I certainly do not expect that level of success all season (and have been a Newton skeptic), there are several signs that are very promising.
1) Newton is not afraid to throw and was reasonably accurate for a rookie in his first game. He is not relying on his legs as his first option, Michael Vick did not figure that lesson out until last year. His rushing ability is icing on the cake as it should be. 400+ yards for an athletic QB is rare. Vick has never broken 400 yards. Steve Young only broke 400 yards 3 times. Newton certainly will not hit that number with regularity, but he has shown he is not afraid to let it fly.
3) Newton can rely on his legs if he is shut down in the passing game. This should help to keep his fantasy scoring more consistent as the season progresses, which is key in fantasy football. (You don’t want a player that scores 40 points one week and 10 points the next. You want a guy that consistently puts up solid numbers every week.)
If you need any help at QB, I do not think you have a choice. You need to hit the waiver wire for Newton ASAP.
